US boating license: state boater education cards

There's no single US boating license. Florida, California, New York and Texas each have their own boating education card or certificate, which shows you meet that state's education requirement when it applies. You must still follow the state's age, safety and local operating rules.

Boater education card questions

Is there a minimum age for a boating card?
There is no shared minimum age. New York's state classroom course starts at 10, while Texas certification starts at 12; age rules for operating a boat are separate.
What is the New York boating test like?
The state classroom final is a closed-book, proctored test with 50 questions and a 76 percent pass mark. Approved online courses use their own approved assessments.
Can I use my boating card in another state?
Florida accepts qualifying other-state or US-territory proof, a valid International Certificate of Competency or a Canadian Pleasure Craft Operator Card with the required identification. California exempts visitors following their home rules for stays up to 60 days from another state or 90 days from another country. New York accepts a NASBLA-approved certificate from a visitor's home state, and Texas accepts NASBLA-approved courses from other US states and territories.
Do permanent boating cards expire?
No. The permanent Florida, California, New York and Texas cards or certificates do not expire. Temporary proof is different: it lasts 90 days in Florida, California and New York, and 60 days for a Texas online course.
How much does a California Boater Card cost?
The California Course for Safe Boating and its examination are free. The initial card application costs USD 11: USD 10 for the card and USD 1 service charge.

Lateral marks are interpreted in the conventional direction of buoyage. The chart, not guesswork, determines which side is port-hand and which is starboard-hand.

  8. You sight a cardinal mark with both cones pointing down and a light showing six quick flashes followed by one long flash. What is the safe action?

    Show answer

Correct answer: C. Pass south of the mark
