Do you need a licence?

Inland motorboats and sailboats need a licence at 7 m hull length, over 14.7 kW or from 10 m² sail. Rowing boats and smaller csónak are exempt. Usual csónak ages: 14 solo, 16 with others, 17 motorised. Licence age: 18. Approved holiday rentals use a separate card.

    What it lets you do
    Approved rental motorboats: hull up to 15 m, still-water speed up to 15 km/h, up to 12 people; designated waters, daylight only without a skipper licence.
    How you get it
    Compulsory theory and practical instruction from the rental operator; signed off by the instructor and acknowledged in writing by the trainee.

    Motorboats under 20 m, up to 12 passengers, on inland waters excluding enclosed seas.
    How you get it
    Two multiple-choice papers, 20 questions in 20 minutes each, pass 15/20 per paper. Practical boat handling, rescue and knots.

    Three theory papers: 20 multiple-choice questions and 20 minutes each; pass 15/20 per paper. Separate motorboat and sailing practical exams.

    What it lets you do
    Supplementary qualification to operate radar on the inland or sea pleasure boats specified in the certificate.
    How you get it
    Approved theory and practical training, then theory and practical exams. The practical may use an approved simulator.

It excludes waters legally classed as inland seas (beltenger), sea operation and commercial skippering; local operating restrictions still apply.
