Do you need a licence?
Yes, at sea and inland you need a skipper certificate.
You don't need one for:
- a rowing boat
- a sailboat up to 7 metres
A knowledge-test certificate covers motorboats up to 7 metres and 7.35 kW, or jet skis. The minimum age is 16, or 18 for planing boats or boats over 12 metres.

- What it lets you do
- You can take motorboats up to 7 metres and 7.35 kW, or jet skis, at sea, on inland waters, or both, as your endorsement allows.
- How you get it
- You take an oral theory test on rules and regulations, then show practical collision avoidance and lights or inland signals. It takes up to 30 minutes in total.

- What it lets you do
- You can take boats under 24 metres at sea, on inland waters, or both, as your endorsement allows. You must be 18 for planing boats or boats over 12 metres.
- How you get it
- You take oral theory and demonstrate practical collision avoidance, lights, chartwork and knots; for inland waters, this includes inland rules. It takes up to 30 minutes in total.
