Do you need a licence?
In approved recreation areas, you need a driving certificate above 5 hp total main-engine power for a craft carrying up to 5 people.
You don't need one for:
- an unpowered craft in an approved recreation area, with safety instruction
- a craft carrying up to 5 people with up to 5 hp total main-engine power in an approved recreation area, with safety instruction
Operators must be from 15 and healthy. Inland and seagoing vessel rules also apply.

- You can take a recreation craft carrying up to 5 people, with total main-engine power over 5 hp, within approved recreation waters.

STCW II/3- What it lets you do
- These are separate near-coastal certificates. You can serve as an officer or chief mate on ships under 500 GT, or as master on ships from 50 GT to under 500 GT.
